The Story Behind "Between Dreams"
Haleakalā National Park - Maui, Hawai'i
An ethereal atmosphere permeates the pre-dawn hours of the Hawaiian wilderness.
While camping along the Kīpahulu Coast inside Haleakalā National Park, I awake at 3 a.m. to discover a perfect crescent moon rising out of the ocean. A blanket of stars covers the island, invoking a wondrous sense to explore this beautiful oasis at night. I gather my camera equipment and a flashlight and head out towards the shore.
I hear the waterfalls of ‘Ohe‘o Gulch flowing through the black volcanic sands, as the ocean roars with waves crashing against the sea cliffs. The tides reflect the shimmering moonlight, and the almost total absence of human light imparts an otherworldly aura to the coastline. I marvel at the mana or life energy present here in this moment, where the connection to spirit calls to create art.
Finding a balanced position for my tripod, I aim the camera and take a shot in the dark. After several attempts at framing a worthy composition, I begin the process of capturing one final image under the night sky. Nearly 20 minutes later, I stop my camera exposure just as the glow of dawn illuminates the horizon. The screen on the back of my camera flashes with a divine scene that’s bursting with color and the brush strokes of nature. I’m amazed to see my image reveal this transition of nocturnal stillness into the first light of day — a time and space between dreams.
