Fresh Water Therapy
MAUI, HAWAIʻI
In the Hawaiian islands, wai (water) is our most precious resource. The Hawaiian word for wealth (waiwai) alludes not only to the physical presence of water, but also to the fertility, abundance, and prosperity it provides.

After kayaking seven miles along the rugged sea cliffs of the Nā Pali coast, I arrived at Kalalau Valley. I stood in awe, observing the cathedral peaks tower over this spectacular river mouth flowing into the Pacific. The magnificence of the wilderness here filled me with so much inspiration and spirit, which I hope this piece of art awakens in you.

As the sounds of the stream lead the mind into a meditative state, a gentle breeze brushes through the trees. Flowers and petals gracefully fall from their branches, some landing on the moss-covered rocks below. An intimate view from within the river invites you to a place of peace, where you can free your mind.

MAUI, HAWAII
In the most isolated lands on Earth— surrounded by thousands of miles of the Pacific Ocean—the chances of life happening in Hawaiʻi seemed impossible. Yet these volcanic mountains became the wettest places in the world, with abundant flows of fresh water and thriving vegetation. Honokōhau Valley is home to the tallest waterfall on Maui and one of the greatest views I’ve been fortunate to photograph thanks to modern aviation.

In the morning hours, the color spectrums of light are cooler and become warmer as the sun rises into the sky. I had envisioned capturing this waterfall with its surrounding colors and textures under a cooler spectrum of light to accentuate its beauty. Everything came together when I finally journeyed into this valley at dawn and discovered a remarkable scene.

HALEAKALĀ NATIONAL PARK, HAWAII
Photographing this immense waterfall, I became aware of the innumerable textures visible in the stone walls. Formed over thousands of years of constant erosion, the cracks in the walls appeared to me like fingerprints of the water. Beneath this 400ft cascade, I felt so humbled and blessed by the power and presence of this wai or water.
